Arlington National Cemetery

Our nation paused to acknowledge and honor all veterans on Sunday and Monday.  In January 2009, we traveled to Washington D.C. and visited Arlington National Cemetery.  It was a trip made even more special by being able to tour the grounds with my uncle who is a U.S. Navy veteran.

Section 27.  Nearly 3800 citizens or contrabands (former slaves who were living in Freedman’s Village on the Arlington Estate) are interred here.  Many of their headstones are inscribed unknown.  Additionally, 1,500 U.S. Colored Troops, the first African-American combat soldiers of the Civil War, are also interred in Section 27.

We acknowledge every veteran as well as every family that has unselfishly supported a family member going off to war.
