Maybe it’s the educator in me, but I love to find and explore the historical sites of the regions I’m visiting.  A few years ago on a cruise, we docked at Cozumel for 8 hours – just enough time to enjoy the island’s beaches, drinks and cuisine.  Not enough time to ferry to the mainland, hail a cab, drive 39 miles south, walk through the National Park to get to the Mayan city, enjoy Tulum’s beach and back.  Hmpf.  I was too close to a Mayan site to not take advantage.  So, my friend and I disembarked as soon as we were allowed with an immense determination to get to and from Tulum in time.

We made it with time to enjoy red, white and green chips in Playa del Carmen before reembarking on our vessel!

What historical sites have you visited?  Where would you like to visit?
